Gator Harley Davidson Poker Run

A poker run and auction is planned for Saturday to benefit Michele Teyssier of Tavares, who was in a serious motorcycle accident Oct. 3 in Zellwood.

Teyssier was flown to ORMC, hospitalized for 10 days, and has had five surgeries on her leg, hand and hip. She will need skin grafting and more surgery. Proceeds from the poker run will be used to help defray medical expenses, since insurance coverage has been depleted.

Michele and her husband, Pierre Teyssier, are owners of the Paradise Harbor Marina in Howey-in-the-Hills.

Poker run participants may sign up at Gator Harley-Davidson at 9:30 a.m., with the last bike out at 11 a.m. Cost is $10 a hand, with extra hands $5 each. The ride starts at Gator Harley in Leesburg and ends at Paradise Harbor Marina. Time for the last bike in is 3:30 p.m. This event is a Chapter Challenge for fellow riders who participate.

Dirt bike owners may get legal place to ride in Martin County soon

Fort Pierce resident Shawn Webb said he spends more than two hours in his car just to get to a place where he and his family can ride dirt bikes and off-road vehicles.

"I have to take my family at least 200 miles to ride at the Croom (Motorcycle Area), a state facility near Brooksville," he said. "With the cost of gasoline, that makes for a very expensive weekend."

'Trespassing' ATV, dirt bike enthusiasts want room to ride

The dirt bikes and four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles that roar through the vacant sand dunes behind Terry Tillman's home in Jensen Beach annoy her and her neighbors.In fact, she is so annoyed, she wants to help the riders find someplace nearby where they can ride legally — without disturbing anyone. If no such place can be found, she wants to help build one.

Tillman is trying to deal with a problem that is vexing government officials and law enforcement agencies on the Treasure Coast and across the state.

ST. PETERSBURG - Led by a motorcycle cop, the swarm of thousands first surged west on the Pier.

Then, like a gusher turning a pipeline corner, it streamed around a landmark comfort station. It swept toward the Renaissance Vinoy Resort, where perhaps 40 bon vivants looked out from the veranda, munching iron-seared grouper and certified Angus burgers.

The Jingle Bell Run, the annual woo-hoo holiday chase on the downtown waterfront, hit full swing just a little after 7:30 p.m. It benefits the Boley Centers, an organization looking after people with a variety of health and behavioral issues. The event, which is for fun rather than running glory, has a past a quarter-century old.

ATV park outdoor concert venue given preliminary approval

'War and Peace' met rock 'n' roll at an epic-length Charlotte County Board of Zoning Appeals meeting Wednesday. Though the board approved a special exception for the 1,022-acre property off Bermont Road in Punta Gorda, the project must still gain approval from Charlotte County's Development Review Committee, as well as the . Attorney Michael Haymans, representing the property, came prepared with an army of experts and local business owners.

5th Annual Toy Ride a ‘roaring' success

Family, friends and officials of all ages came to the Columbia County Fairgrounds Saturday on their motorcycles and in their cars to participate in the 5th Annual Toy Ride, which benefits the Christmas Dream Machine.

“Every dime we raise today will go to charity,” said Cookie Murray, event organizer. “We already had $2,000 in toys donated to us.”
Before the toy ride started, 20 bicycles, three wagons, and other toys had already been collected.

People from around the area strapped down toys to their motorcycles, and started gathering at the fairgrounds at 10 a.m.

440 Majors Made Available To Fla. High Schoolers

Officials Hope Idea Discourages Students From Dropping Out

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida high school students will be able to choose from 440 approved majors ranging from assistant landscape technician to global leadership under a new law designed to improve the state's dismal graduation rate, education officials announced Monday.

The idea, based on college majors, is to discourage students from dropping out by making high school more interesting. The major requirement does that by engaging and challenging students and getting them to set goals, said Education Commissioner John Winn.
Many majors are highly specialized such as ceramics, culinary journalism, sports and recreational turf operations, digital arts, automotive collision repair and refining, boatbuilding, motorcycle service technology and fire sprinkler technology.

Motorcycles thunder to Sarasota for benefit event

Hundreds of hogs will invade the streets of downtown Sarasota this weekend.

Only these hogs will have rumbling motors, shiny chrome accents and smooth leather seats.Motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the state are expected to travel to Sarasota for the ninth annual Thunder By the Bay festival. The three-day event, which benefits The Florida Center for Child and Family Development of Sarasota, will feature a bike show, live music, celebrity bike builders as special guests and professional riders performing freestyle motocross stunts.
